 When the barber’s job involved more than one task

Some 60 years ago, a barber’s job was not limited to cutting and shaving men’s hair but it also involved surgery and dentistry. At the time, barbers were experts in carrying out circumcisions, blood cupping, bone setting, cauterizing and treatment of dental problems, measles and smallpox. They also carried out simple operations.
